Just two days after its August 12, 2026 release, xAI's Grok 4.6 is rolling out to GitHub Copilot. Announced on August 14, 2026, the integration spans eight development surfaces, including VS Code, Visual Studio, the Copilot CLI, the Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse. The model is available across Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers, though enterprise administrators must manually enable the model in their settings.

GitHub's internal testing highlights the model's strength in terminal-based coding and long-horizon reasoning. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Grok 4.6 High scored 61, matching OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol Max and trailing Anthropic's Fable 5 Max by one point. On the GDPVal-AA knowledge-work evaluation, Grok 4.6 posted 1753, beating GPT-5.6 Sol Max's 1728 and Fable 5 Max's 1741. In agentic coding, Grok 4.6 scored 69.9% on CursorBench v3.2, compared to 67.2% for GPT-5.6 Sol Max and 70.5% for Fable 5 Max. On DeepSWE v1.1, it reached 65.9%, up from Grok 4.5 High's 54% but behind GPT-5.6 Sol Max's 73%. On Terminal-Bench v3.0, Grok 4.6 scored 26%, nearly doubling Grok 4.5 High's 15.7% but falling short of GPT-5.6 Sol Max's 34.6%.

The model's capabilities stem from a training process that combined curated reasoning data, supervised fine-tuning trajectories from Grok 4.5, and reinforcement learning on tasks like kernel optimization, web development, and computer-aided design. For developers, Grok 4.6 offers a highly competitive pricing structure. Billed under usage-based pricing at provider list rates, it costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. This is significantly cheaper than GPT-5.6 Sol at $5 input and $30 output, or Claude Opus-class models at $5 input and $25 output.

Beyond Copilot, Grok 4.6 is accessible via xAI's API, Cursor, Grok Build, OpenRouter, Vercel, and Cloudflare. To encourage adoption, xAI is offering doubled included usage in Grok Build and Cursor until August 19, 2026.
