Honor Launches Robot Phone with Autonomous Gimbal
Honor has officially launched its highly anticipated Robot Phone in China, signaling a shift toward consumer hardware that integrates autonomous physical movement with interactive AI.

Honor has officially released its unique Robot Phone, opening pre-orders in China on August 12 ahead of its August 18 sales debut. The device features a built-in motorized gimbal designed to track subjects and capture cinematic footage autonomously. Beyond its physical capabilities, the phone reacts to its environment and can engage in real-time conversations. This launch represents a broader push to integrate physical automation into everyday consumer electronics, challenging developers to design software that bridges mobile operating systems with physical robotics.
Other consumer and service robotics firms are also upgrading their hardware capabilities. Matic has introduced a free update called Cues for its robotic vacuum cleaner, enabling voice and gesture controls via five onboard cameras. This update precedes an upcoming price hike for the vacuum, which will rise from $1,245 to $1,495 on September 9. Meanwhile, food hall chain Wonder is deploying kitchen robots capable of preparing 500 bowls of food per hour, tripling output. In the industrial sector, new benchmarks are redefining efficiency. Shenzhen-based X Square Robot demonstrated its WALL-B system sorting 1,816 parcels per hour with 98 percent accuracy. This significantly outpaces Figure AI, whose three humanoid robots processed approximately 1,250 parcels per hour combined over a 200-hour run. However, building these advanced systems remains logistically complex. Following Washington's ban on new Chinese robot imports last month, some US engineers are reportedly hand-carrying components from Shenzhen in their personal luggage to bypass supply chain bottlenecks.
These shifting dynamics are forcing major corporate realignments. Uber recently divested its entire stake in Serve Robotics, the delivery startup spun out of Postmates following Uber's $2.65 billion acquisition in 2020. The sudden exit highlights diverging corporate strategies on how to scale autonomous delivery fleets. For robotics practitioners, these developments show that while hardware capabilities and sorting benchmarks are accelerating, navigating geopolitical supply chains and corporate partnerships remains as critical as the underlying AI.
