Karsan Deploys Autonomous E-ATAK Bus at Dutch Theme Park

Turkish bus manufacturer Karsan has initiated passenger service with its Autonomous e-ATAK at the Efteling theme park in the Netherlands. The service officially commenced on August 12, 2026, following a launch ceremony on August 10. This deployment marks the first autonomous bus operation on public roads in the province of North Brabant. The SAE Level-4 vehicle navigates a 6-kilometer shuttle corridor in mixed traffic between the Efteling Hoofdingang and Wonderhotel stops, connecting the park's main transport hub with local lodging. The service is free and wheelchair-accessible.

The shuttle runs on ADASTEC's automated driving software, which also powers Karsan's previous Dutch deployment at Rotterdam The Hague Airport. That earlier project, launched in July 2025, operates two e-ATAKs between the Meijersplein metro station and the airport terminal under a commercial permit from the Dutch vehicle authority, RDW. In contrast, the Efteling service operates under a public-road testing approval for a pilot lasting approximately two months. This trial allows the consortium—which includes Karsan, Arriva, the Province of North Brabant, the Municipality of Loon op Zand, SmartwayZ.NL, Dutch Automated Mobility, Applied Autonomy, and ADASTEC—to collect passenger experience and operational data.

For transit practitioners, the Efteling pilot represents a critical expansion of the e-ATAK's operational design domain. While the Rotterdam route operates in a controlled airport access zone, the Efteling route mixes public roads with private areas shared by cyclists, pedestrians, and hotel traffic. Karsan's e-ATAK has already carried over 100,000 passengers across 12 countries, following its first U.S. operation in 2021 and its European public road debut in 2022. As companies like Pony.ai and Uber scale up to 2,000-plus robotaxis across Europe, fixed-route deployments like Efteling demonstrate how operators can solve first-and-last-mile transit challenges using remote-supervision models.
