IBM has announced the general availability of a self-hosted deployment option for IBM Bob, its agentic software development platform. Bob manages the entire software development lifecycle, from understanding code and planning tasks to executing changes and validating results. This new release allows enterprises to run the platform on-premises, in private or sovereign clouds, and within completely air-gapped networks, ensuring sensitive code never leaves the organization's infrastructure.

Under this bring-your-own-license model, the self-hosted version of Bob does not come bundled with an AI model. Instead, customers must source and host a supported model themselves. For fully isolated environments, IBM supports self-hosted models like NVIDIA Nemotron and Poolside Laguna. For hybrid or private SaaS setups, organizations can route workloads via private connectivity to external models, including Claude Sonnet 5.0, Claude Opus 4.8, Gemini 3.7 Flash, and OpenAI GPT 5.6 Sol.

For software practitioners in highly regulated industries like banking, this architecture offers a flexible way to balance security and performance. Developers can use local, self-hosted models to analyze and modify sensitive core applications, while routing less restricted tasks to more powerful external models. The core user experience, which includes the IDE integration and the BobShell terminal interface, remains identical across both configurations. IBM also offers optional Premium Packages specifically tailored for modernizing legacy systems, including Java, IBM i, and IBM Z mainframe code.

This release positions IBM Bob as a direct competitor to other enterprise-focused coding tools like GitLab Duo Agent Platform Self-Hosted, Mistral Vibe for Code, and GitHub Copilot CLI. While competitors often tie their agents to specific DevOps platforms or proprietary model suites, IBM is targeting the modernization of long-lived enterprise estates that cannot connect to the public internet. IBM has not publicly disclosed pricing for the self-hosted option, directing interested enterprise buyers to request a custom demo.
