An APK teardown of a rumored Android update suggests that Google is preparing to expand its Gemini-powered Call for Me feature to handle personal phone calls. Currently limited to interacting with businesses, the automated calling feature may soon allow users to delegate quick, routine voice messages to their contacts. According to findings from Android Authority, an introductory screen for Gemini Calling outlines examples of how the feature would work, such as instructing the assistant to call a parent to say you are running 15 minutes late, or asking it to call a friend to see if they are coming over for dinner.

Based on these discovered examples, the expanded capability will likely remain restricted to basic, text-like transmissions rather than full, open-ended conversations. Even with these limitations, the tool could prove highly useful for delivering brief updates to individuals who do not frequently check text messages, prefer voice communications, or still rely on traditional landline phones.

The teardown also revealed evidence of granular permissions for Gemini actions within individual applications. These settings appear to include specific controls for phone call permissions, which would allow users to choose exactly which capabilities they want to grant the AI. This granular control could also provide a mechanism for users to opt out of receiving automated calls generated by other Gemini users.

For mobile developers and AI practitioners, this development highlights Google's ongoing push to deeply integrate Gemini into the core communication stack of the Android operating system. While Google has not officially confirmed the release of these features, the presence of granular permission settings indicates that the company is actively addressing the privacy and consent challenges associated with outbound AI voice agents.
