DeepSeek has launched official desktop applications for macOS on Apple silicon and Windows 64-bit with the release of DeepSeek Harness v0.2 preview. Known as dsh, this open-source agent runtime turns language models into active agents that can read files, execute commands, and maintain plans. Users can run the preview immediately by downloading it from the official website or executing "npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web" in their terminal. The desktop build bundles the dsh command, removing the need for separate Node.js or pnpm installations.

The v0.2 update introduces built-in tools for office and development tasks, a plugin management interface, and a sidebar for file and diff reviews. Users can feed documents, spreadsheets, or PDFs to the harness to generate charts and slides, or use the Automation Task plugin to schedule recurring prompts. The system operates in four distinct modes: Standard, Creator (where the agent builds and installs its own plugins), PTC (programmatic tool calling running Node code in a separate process), and Minimal.

DeepSeek Harness also serves as the company's evaluation rig. In Minimal mode, the DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 model scored 82.7 on Terminal Bench 2.1. First open-sourced under the MIT license in August 2026, the framework runs on Cordis, based on the research paper "A Programming Paradigm for Spatiotemporal Composability." The project has gained massive traction, surpassing 240,000 GitHub stars and 29,000 forks. Because every layer is a replaceable plugin, developers can connect third-party models or custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

The subsequent v0.2.1-alpha.1 build adds an experimental compatibility layer for Claude Code Mods to test API overlap, alongside an optional Developer Tools bundle and a "--public-url" flag for reverse proxies. For practitioners, this release simplifies agent deployment by eliminating complex environment setups. By allowing users to sign in with a DeepSeek account to access web search without an extra API key, or swap out the entire agent loop as a plugin, the harness provides an accessible yet highly customizable local environment for building agentic workflows.
