Anthropic's Claude Can Now Edit Google Docs and Sheets
Anthropic has launched a public beta of Claude for Workspace, allowing paid users to edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides directly from a sidebar or within the Claude chat interface.

Anthropic has released Claude for Workspace in public beta, bringing its AI assistant directly into Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Available to users on all paid plans, the integration operates as a sidebar within Google's productivity suite, mirroring Anthropic's existing add-on for Microsoft 365. It also works in reverse, allowing users to create and modify Google files inside a side-by-side pane within the Claude web app or desktop client.
The integration allows Claude to read and write directly to active files. In Google Docs, the assistant can edit sentences and headings while preserving formatting, presenting larger rewrites as suggestion cards. In Sheets, Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables, generate native charts, and even process selected data ranges using Python. For Slides, it can construct presentations using existing layouts and themes, while checking for layout errors like overlapping objects or off-slide content.
Practitioners can choose between an "Ask before edits" mode, which requires manual approval for each change, and an "Accept all edits" mode for uninterrupted workflows. However, the beta comes with several technical constraints. It is not supported on Firefox, requiring Chrome or the Claude Desktop browser. Each operation has a strict six-minute execution cap, and messages are limited to 20 attachments with a 30 MB limit per document. Additionally, Claude cannot share files, transfer ownership, or write Google Apps Script triggers.
For enterprise teams, this integration bridges the gap with Google's native Gemini tool, allowing organizations to use Claude without constantly copying and pasting text between tabs. Administrators can deploy the add-on via the Google Workspace Marketplace, though enterprise owners must manually enable the connectors first. The integration respects existing Google sharing permissions and supports enterprise security features like customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit exports.
